Chip giant AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) has launched an investigation after a notorious hacker announced selling sensitive data allegedly belonging to the company.
The hacker known as IntelBroker announced earlier this week on the BreachForums cybercrime forum — which in the past years was shut down and resurrected several times — that he was “selling the AMD.com data breach”.
The data offered for sale allegedly includes information on future AMD products, customer and employee databases, datasheets, source code, property files, firmware, and financial documents. The employee database allegedly includes information such as name, job role, phone number, and email address.
IntelBroker has made public several screenshots in an attempt to demonstrate his claims. The compromised files were allegedly obtained in June 2024.
“We are aware of a cybercriminal organization claiming to be in possession of stolen AMD data,” an AMD spokesperson told SecurityWeek. “We are working closely with law enforcement officials and a third-party hosting partner to investigate the claim and the significance of the data.”
AMD’s statement suggests that the data, if authentic, could originate from a third-party hosting provider rather than directly from the chipmaker’s own systems.
Indeed it’s not uncommon for data offered for sale by IntelBroker to come from third-party platforms, and it’s also not uncommon for the hacker to exaggerate his claims.
Hopefully AMD will share an update once it can determine the source of the data and the full extent of the breach.
This would not be the first time AMD has suffered a data breach. Back in 2020, the company confirmed that a hacker had stolen files related to some of its graphics products, but it was not too concerned about the impact of the leak.
IntelBroker recently offered to sell data from Acuity, Zscaler and Europol, among others.
